Leum Engineering Ultimate Survey Kit
I’ve been doing dock surveys for 20 years now (no comments please). The reality is that they are a necessary evil. A salesman has to wear a lot of hats and if you’ve ever tried to do a dock survey with a string and line level, you realize that’s just nonsense. So I created a tool to make your lives easier, the Ultimate Survey Kit.

Here is a typical salesman doing a dock survey. “Yep, 48” dock with a level approach (I hope my installers can figure it out). “
The toughest part of a dock survey is getting the dock profile. So we made a custom base and found a laser that can be bolted to the front edge. The magic is that we have the laser offset built into the base so what you measure is exactly what the distance is from the dock level down to that point on the grade. Simply attach the laser to the front of the base and then level using the thumb screw on the back.
Next, put the cool red laser glasses on. Even if you don’t need them you’ll really look like you know what you’re doing. Take the laser tape measure and walk out to the first grade change. Using the laser tape measure how far you are from the dock. Then take the standard tape and measure down to the ground from the laser point and you’ll see what the elevation is at that point.—Repeat as needed.
We put all the tools in one handy to carry case, which includes a notepad to help you with some common
dimensions if you don’t have the correct company survey.
Here’s exactly what’s in there:
- · Hard Carrying Case – With Leum Logo
- · Laser Level
- · Custom Level Base
- · Laser Tape Measure
- · Red Laser Glasses
- · 25’ Tape Measure
- · LED flashlight
- · Leum Engineering Pen with Light
- · Survey Notepad
Honestly, the kit works the best when doing rail surveys. I did 400’ of curved track in about 30 minutes, including the distance above rail. Without the kit, I would have needed to hire a surveyor.
Every salesman should have one of these kits, and I’m sure you have some of the pieces, but not in one kit. This is your best time saving tool since the cell phone. There are a couple ways to get these. First, go get a big order and I’ll send you one. This is totally subjective on my part to keep it easy for me. The second way is to just buy one. Christmas is coming or you just started in the business, you need this.
My guys who already have them, say they use them every day. It might just be the laser tape, finding the ceiling height for a fan install or measuring a tall dock door opening. It might be the LED light, looking under a railboard to see if we can refurbish it. They might be doing a wheel riser survey or using the pen to sign a PO for an Impactable Dock Ramp. I know it’s a shameless plug, but it’s my blog.
If you have any questions, please call me and I can fill you in on any other details.
